This is mostly Mickey soapboxing, not providing information about the radio.
While messing with the alignment procedures and trying to get some adjustments to stay put, it occured to me that maybe the problem wasn't with the radio, it was with what I thought the radio should be and do.
These days, if I want to listen to aircraft pilots around the airport, I tune a radio to 123.450 MHz, exactly 123.450 MHz, and there they are. We're in a digital world.
My cell phone has a tiny little transmitter and an antenna the size of a postage stamp and we all know how many different things it will do.
The SX-28 was a marvel for it's time but we need to remember that it was also on the drawing board just 19 years after the first commercial AM radio station started up. If people wanted to listen to a such-and-such radio station, they tuned to that general dial setting and hunted around till they found it.
I need to set my expectations for 1940, not 2026.
